Spring has sprung

Shawn 2017

Blog Fam,

What’s up, everyone?! Am sitting here on my rack awaiting Count Time. I did just come from outside where it’s unbelievably nice out. Just the right amount of sun, breeze and spring color. Tomorrow will be much different, I’m afraid – rain and possibly gloom – so will enjoy the rest of this day. Do hope you’re out there enjoying the spring when it shows up for you.

Anyway, I wanted to share with you the fact that I had a really good visit for three consecutive days last week. A very dear friend from Scotland came to hangout for a little while. Needless to say, this is a treat for me that I get to share in with one of my friends who remains on death row at the moment. She comes visit with me for three days and then goes to spend three with him in Chillicothe. And while both respective visits are prison related, they are very different. To be sure, such a trip is not the easiest thing to give oneself to, considering everything required to go through. She’s really a trooper for what she puts herself through for us guys. Her dedication is remarkable, to say the least, and she’s very much appreciated. Anyway, we had a great time, in spite of the visiting room being jammed packed for two of those days. The Ice Queen was working those three days, unfortunately, but it was no problem to us, thankfully. She’s usually making visits unpleasant any way she can. We managed to tune her and all the negativity out, which isnโ€™t always easy to do.

Anyway, I’m soon out in the garden again this year, which I’m excited about. Time to start eating healthily again ๐Ÿ™‚ But first, have to get dirty out there, and get everything prepared (i.e. ground, planting, and so on).

So what else, y’all?! Oh, almost forgot to mention, I have been invited to two different events next week; actually, one is more of an event than the other, which is being hosted by the Deputy Warden (Ms. Wampler) of Special Services – a variety of people from the outside will be coming in who want to know more about prison culture. I have been selected to display up to four pieces of artwork. She put out a call to the General Population that she wanted to display a total of five pieces of art during this event and if anyone wanted to possibly have some art displayed she would come around and judge to pick five pieces. I had talked to her about a month ago about her wanting to purchase some art, and at the time she briefly mentioned I could possibly be interested in participating in some kind of art competition, but didn’t give details. I’m guessing this event is what she was referring to, because when she was checking out some of my art today she told me she was automatically inviting me, but because she liked some of my work so much she said she wanted me to display four pieces (I’m taking five, though, because she was really liking a certain piece (stylistically) but not liking the subject-matter, which is a cat -she hate cats (laugh); instead of a cat, though, I’m bringing an owl of similar style she likes. Four pieces is plenty actually, and flattered she’s wanting me to be there. I’ll get to mingle, talk about prison culture, perhaps my testimony, and who knows, make some beneficial connections?.

The other situation is more informal, I suppose, as it involves some artist types from New York and elsewhere coming in who want to hangout and interact with a group of handpicked guys. Should be interesting and fun. Looking forward to interacting with the outside and networking. Besides that, I’m still working towards getting my artwork out there in the public space more. Hopefully before long I’ll be able to have an online gallery of sorts for you to visit and perhaps see something you like ๐Ÿ™‚ I even take personal orders if you have portraits you’d like done. And while I have to still take care of some moving parts, I think for the moment, though, you can visit my nephew’s site and see a few pieces. He’s an artist of sorts in his own right. You’ll see what I mean. Checkout: http://www.hawkthebarberprodigy.com

That’s it for now, y’all. Gotta go get on the phone. As always, be blessed out there, and try to enjoy the little moments as much as the big ones. Will be back before long. Happy Easter, y’all!

Good to see your blog, Shawn – and sorry I haven’t written for so long… I’m staying with my artist friend, Tim, near Leeds in the north of England for Easter; mostly it’s been cold and wet but we had one glorioous day when we went walking the Dales [Ill have to send you some pics!] at a place with the strange name of Niddersley. Strange name but beautiful spot! Take care! S!
